The Boston Terrier Club History

The Boston Terrier club of NSW Inc owes its inception to breed Stalwart and Foundation member Elaine Bond. Without her love for the breed and her dedication, the breed in Australia would have most likely taken a different path.

Elaine May Bond was born Elaine Gainey 24th March 1934 at Inverell NSW. She was the eldest of 6 siblings. The Family moved to Bogabilla, Goodiwindi northern NSW area where Elaine developed a love of the land and horses where she competed at Rodeos, Rough Riding, Camp drafting and Dressage. She even competed at Sydney Royal on her beloved horse Buttons and Bows.

Elaine met her first husband and in the early 60’s moved to Cooma NSW where she began her love of breeding and showing dogs.

After her divorce, Elaine met Ray Bond at a dog show in Port Macquarie NSW and the rest as they say is history.

With the help of the late Dr Harry Spira and the late Bill Spilstead Ray and Elaine Bond and some other breed enthusiasts, the Boston Terrier Club of NSW was formed.

The first show was an Open show held in 1981 at St Ives Showground Judge by Mr. L House from Canada. With an entry of 68, Best in Show went to Bostonway Bozo from the Intermediate class, who went on to become the breed record holder with 9 Best In Shows.

The first Championship show was held the year after, again at St Ives showground. Judged by the late Dr Harry Spira. With an entry of 68 again, Best In Show was awarded to a Puppy Bitch Bostonway Medow Robin.

Elaines love of the Brachycephalic breeds extended to Pugs, Boxers and Bulldogs but the Boston’s always had the front row seat in her heart.

Elaine was one of the early pioneers to import dogs into Australia, along with other dedicated breeders, these influential dogs of History are responsible for a lot of the dogs we have here today. The Boston fraternity are very grateful to Elaine and Ray’s contribution to the breed and to the birth of the Foundation breed club of Australia.
