From 1900 until 1950, the AKC registered more Boston Terriers than any other breed
In fact, not only was the Boston Terrier the first breed created in America to be granted official recognition by the AKC, it was the first Non-Sporting breed developed in America, and the first breed whose primary purpose was companionship rather than work. The Boston also became the first breed to enjoy the number one position with the AKC for two decades, an astounding feat. Even before that, the Boston Terrier was registered with the United Kennel Club in 1914 becoming one of the first companion dogs to be entered with that registry.
The breed fell to the number two position in the 1920s after its initial reign as number-one, but throughout the 1920’s, the Boston Terrier was one of the most popular dogs in America, and in all probability was the most common pedigreed breed for that decade.
